I'll only recommend to you what I use myself and what is used by professionals. First, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, it's trustworthy, it has the Microsoft name to back it up, and they have no actual investment in seeing you infected. I've had no problems with it. Second, you probably hear a lot about Norton, and maybe Kaspersky. They offer similar environments at my last look. The guys at Staples told me to go with Kaspersky when I got infected several times while using Norton/Symantec. What I had to find out on my own was that the same guys at Staples use MalwareBytes to disinfect systems with their geek squad. I had forgotten about MalwareBytes, but its been around for years (I'm a dinosaur in computers). It was good back then, and its better now. You buy one copy now and its good for life with lifetime updates (enterprise licenses also available).

MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials is what I use. They do not interfere with each other, and they compliment each other. That's my recommendation.

You may also want to have a copy of AVG on hand just for those circumstances when you want a boot up check AFTER a very bad attack.

There is a saying that goes "You get what you pay for". With Antivirus, this is not true. Most paid AV's dont' protect as well as they say they do. Norton and McAfee being two of the worst. I would recommend Avast Av. It's free and has a very high detection rate and is highly recommended by other computer techs. The real-time scanning can scan your webpages for malware and stop it from even getting on the computer.

For complete computer security, it is also recommended to use Antimalware tools as well, such as Malwarebytes Antimalware, SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and an Adblocker, such as Adblock Plus or your host file. (Google host file and go to the mvps.org website to learn more).

All of this is free and works very well.

  • Microsoft security essentials isn't that powerful

I think Norton 360 is better, it helped me remove an autorun virus

    It's for $44.99 a year

You are PAYING for antivirus? There are so many good free ones out there. I either use AVG or AVAST!. They get annoying at times but work well.

Anything with the Microsoft stamp of approval leaves something to be desired when it comes to PC protection.

Adblock is by far the best way to block all the advertisement and pop-up

I found a free download of Adblock here http://bitly.com/1pkiEgX
