Drawing tablet general information please?

I was thinking about getting a drawing tablet, but what is it really?

Are there any programs that need to be used with it? (Photoshop?)

If you use one, how do you like it?

If I get one, what brand/type should I get?

Um...just some general info would be great because I'm new to all this tablet stuff.

thanks in advance :)

Update:

No, I should've cleared this up, I meant a tablet as in like an electronic drawing pad.

Ok... I'll try to answer all your questions.

A tablet is useful if you want to illustrate things on the computer or use Photoshop for its drawing tools rather than photoediting capabilities. A tablet is a device with a pen tool and a flat umm... tablet surface that you draw on like a regular pen and paper (except there is no ink, the line just turns up on the computer)

How much money do you want to spend? Because if you don't want to spend much, Photoshop and those awesome tablet-moniter things (upwards of 300 bucks) would kinda out price you. However, there are a couple of cheap brands that would work well for beginning or digital art as a hobby:

    1. Wacom Bamboo (I have this)---Go on amazon and check out the best one for your operating system-I got mine at a good deal for only $60 and it came with Photoshop Elements (an easier and cheaper version of photoshop

    2. Digi-Pro---cheaper than Wacom ($35), but doesn't come with Photoshop. Fairly reliable, supposedly not as good of quality, but close. You could get a free graphics program like GIMP if you want to save money and not buy Photoshop or Corel programs

    3. Check out Amazon and type in "graphics tablets"--see for yourself! (as a general rule for anything, the cheaper you go, the more of a risk you're making)

    Hope this helps!
