The distance between 5 and x on the number line can be written as x - 5. Between 15 and x, as 15 - x. Three times as far can be represented by multiplying 3 (15 - x).

Does that make sense? Set these equal to one another and solve for x, and you should have it.

    X-5 is three times 15-x. That says it itself. X-5 =(is) 3*(15-x).
