What's the difference between windows 7 control panel and uninstall?

Seems like in windows xp all I had to do was hit contro panel. Windows 7, what's control panel for? If I want to uninstall something I just go straight to uninstall. Is control panel just an extra step?

    In Windows 7 to uninstall an application completely from the system you need to remove the application from ‘Programs and Features’ in ‘Control Panel.
