On the matter of John F Kennedy?

What was his rationale for voting against the Civil Rights Act of 1957?

Also, included in his legacy is his eventual action on equal rights but, was he genuinely concerned about the plight of black Americans or merely dragged into it?

Because he was planning on running for President in 1960 where he would have more power to push through a comprehensive bill. Had he voted for the Civil Rights act in 1957 he would have lost the southern vote and Nixon would have been President in 1961.

The truth is he was dragged into it. This was because when he was president he wanted to give a more positive image to countries abroad. However the footage of protests such as those in Birmingham to him ruined his assertion that many Americans were not monsters with kindness for the countries around them.
