In dipole dipole forces, the partial positive charge on an atom of covalent molecule attracts the partial negatively charged atom of another covalently bonded molecule and vice versa. For example, partially positive H of one HCl attracts partially negative Cl of another HCl molecule.

in ion dipole, partial positive atom of a covalently bonded molecule attracts an isolated fully negative ion or vice versa. For example, partially positive H of HCl attracts an isolated Cl negative ion.
