Comodo isn't a good choice as you found out. Zonealarm free ( firewall only) should work fine. There are not a lot of free firewalls. Why are you looking? Windows firewall works fine, and if you need a good two way firewall that is easy to use well good luck finding one. The only two that are left that are good are Outpost firewall free and Online Armor free.

First off AVG is not a firewall by itself and two Zone Alarm is dissapointing as a firewall and my choices would be Comodo, Online Armour, or Private Firewall.

There is no need to install a firewall. Your router (wireless or not) protects you from outside traffic. No only that but Windows has a firewall built in and you can edit every aspect of communication down the the application specifically.
Most advanced users get a firewall only if they want their pc to stop from communicating out. Strange but true. It is usually the people who have jacked software and want to make sure it doesn't phone home per say.

Free is good. But what is your piece of mind worth. You can always go with Avast antivirus. Just log on to www.avast.com and download there free software.
