Do you need to pay sales tax if you are leasing a car?
I wanted to lease a new Kia and the deal sounded really good because no down payment was necessary. Then I found out that there were "fees" that needed to be paid. One of these fees was sales tax. I'm wondering why I have to pay sales tax if the dealership owns the title. Is this legit?

Taxes are mandatory when purchasing or leasing a vehicle, regardless of the auto maker. We recommend you stop by your local dealership to go over all costs involved with a sales representative. Good luck!

The dealership does not hold the title, the leasing company does. Somebody has to pay the sales tax and in virtually all states that somebody is the lessee, aka, you.

Yes.
In fact, in many states, all of the sales tax on the entire lease is due at the inception of the lease. In other states, each payment is subject to sales tax.

I don't know of any state that will issue license plates until the taxes are paid. Even in Delaware, which doesn't have a sales tax, you need to pay a tax (which they call a document tax) of 3.75% before you can get license plates.

SURE you do when you do want to lease that vehicle and that is what the charges are stated as at that time in your life OK.
