I suggest to try the Philippines. The Philippines is made up of 7,000 islands and only the major islands have been inhabited. There are virgin forests if you wish when you go outside of Manila mostly to the provinces and the islands of Visayas. What you hear in the news is only concentrated on one part of the country. Seriously. If you try to go outside the capital city, up in the north , south you will meet different cultures (Cebu,Baguio,Ilo-Ilo,Subic and etc...) Mindanao is also a good place to visit especially Davao and Cagayan De Oro...only in the southern part i think is what has been heard on news but sometimes it is exaggerated in the media. The Philippines is one of the most diverse countries in the world and there you will meet different kinds of culture depending on the place you will be.

Try Myanmar - Bhutan, if you can afford it, Mongolia

and in your travels in Thailand, what did you find? Most of the tourist haunts are not so nice and barely resemble the reality of the place. I live in the coutnryside, near a small city, near lovely waterfalls and forest, amidst rice fields and it is rare we have tourists here.

Hong Kong! You won't believe that over 85% of HK's area are nature, mountains, parks, wetlands, grasslands, trails, so forth. The sea in Sai Kung is gorgeous for deep sea diving, it has one of the most beautiful corals and sea bed. www.DiscoverHongKong.com
