The average (arithmetic mean) of five numbers is 25. After one of the numbers is removed, the average of the remaining numbers is 31. What number has been removed?

The average = the sum of all numbers/the number of numbers (how many there are)
In this case, 25 = x/5
x = 125.
When we remove a number, 31 = x/4
x = 124.
The difference between 125 and 124 is 1.
The number 1 has been removed from the original list.
