On segment WZ above, if WY=23, XZ=29, and YZ is twice WX, what is the value of XY?
I compared 23-a=29-2a and got 6, but the answer is 17.
What am I doing wrong?

WX= a
YZ= 2a
XY= b
a+b=23 so a= 23-b
2a+b=29
2(23-b)+b=29
46-2b+b=29
46-b=29
b=17
XY is 17
Wx is 6
YZ is 12

you are going right , the answer is 6 for a which is nothing but the length of WX.
You have to calculate length for XY which will be WY - WX = 23-6 = 17.
