How do I multiply 6.1 x 0.82?

I know what the answer is using a calculator, but I really need to know how to multiply this problem step-by-step without one.

    Multiply as whole numbers and disregard the decimals. So 6.1 becomes 61 and .82 becomes 82. Answer becomes 5002. Move the decimal over however many spots were in the original number i.e 6.1 has one (1) decimal and .82 has two (2) decimals. Move the decimal over 3 spots and voila,you have your answer. 6.1 x .82 = 5.002/61 x 82 = 5002.

    4.8 + .08 + 0.12 + .002 = 4.8 + .2 + 0.002 = 5.002
