My garden looks bedraggled...?

I live in the South. My garden looks pitiful. What do the rest of you Southerners do in the garden to make it pretty at this time of the year? Which flowers do you plant right about now? Do you plant grasses, or a combination? Help!

I have two Datura that are doing very well with very little matinence. But they're poisonous if ingested so be cautious. Butterfly bush is a wonderful option... Russian sage is readily available in most garden stores and is lovely and smells good... easy to grow. My room mate is trying mums, but right now when it's still getting hot they're not doing too well. I would wait a few more weeks on those. Sweet potato vine is an EXCELLENT option!!! Plus you can take one little vine and make it into 1/2 dozen plants!!! I just went to my mom's work and snipped some cuttings. Stuck them in the ground and now a week later they're doing wonderful! They're in full sun and loving it. Really brightens up the garden without any work or $$.
