How long will it take to kick a heavy caffeine addiction?

I am trying to eliminate a lot of processed foods and caffeine from my diet. I feel horrible! Last night I drank a half cup of coffee and life was instantly wonderful again. I hate having something as simple as a drink have this much control over me. It makes me want to quit even more. How long do the withdrawal symptoms normally last? I'm drinking LOTS of water

I've been through the whole caffeine addiction & withdrawal, so I'll just say a few things here :-)

I used to take 6 caffeine pills a day, a long with 6 500ml cans of pure caffeinated drinks, so you can probably imagine withdrawal was hard. It does get quite difficult but you have to know what the symptoms are and how to deal with them.

The main things you'll feel are: Nausea/feeling sick & even throwing up. Horrible headaches. Dizziness. Loss of appetite. Anxiety. Paranoia. Insomnia/unable to sleep. Feeling exhausted. Shaking.

It really is surprising how difficult caffeine withdrawal is and how bad the affects are.

Anyway, to answer your main question, it really depends on how much caffeine you used to have, and how much you're decreasing it now. All-in-all, it should take about two weeks for you to fully recover. It took me roughly two-three weeks to feel 50% normal again.

The symptoms such as nausea, headaches, tiredness, loss of appetite will disappear more quickly than the rest. However, the more psychological symptoms such as Anxiety, paranoia, insomnia will last a little longer, for a few weeks & in my opinion, the psychological symptoms are the hardest ones to deal with.

So... PHYSICAL symptoms will last for possibly up to a week, a week and 1/2 - possibly even two weeks depending on the level of your addiction. PSYCHOLOGICAL symptoms will last for about 2 to 3 weeks, again, maybe more if your addiction is not quite as simple!

Good luck. My advice is to keep drinking lots of water like you are, avoid ANYTHING caffeinated as this will prolong the withdrawal process, therefore you're likely to feel unwell for longer than you would have. Try to get decent sleep and don't push yourself too hard - try not to overdo things.

    Hope this helped :-)

  • It's like getting over a nicotine addiction

It will take about three days and you'll get massive headaches and ****. But the fourth day youll feel fine. If you really want to purge your system of any caffeine or any other drugs, drink only 100% fruit juice (No sugar or additives and ****) for those three days. It'll be even harder but it feels even better after your first meal on the fourth day.

    Good luck

I am about a year older than you and have been smoking regularly for about the same amount of time. I think that addiction to marijuana is mainly mental. If you are serious about kicking the habit, then you should evaluate your life. Ask yourself what in your life allows you to continue to smoke- then change it! If not maybe you should become involved in a 12 step program if you can't do it on your own. Good Luck!

Headaches should cease within a few days. But it will take about a month to get your body completely off caffeine.

Good choice. Coffee is carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

If you have headaches, try vitamin D3. It eliminated my headaches.

I read that apple juice is just as effective for waking you up as coffee. I drink it all day long.
