Do you agree that today's music has declined significantly over the last twenty years or so?
I listen to music from the '70s, '80s, '90s, and even ten years ago. It was so much better then. Now, all the music is digital, and people seem to be satisfied, even love those songs. I used to listen to today's stuff as well, before I started with Beethoven and Enya. It's turned into shallow songs, younger and younger "musicians", and it's all about the big money and publicity. Is it just me, or do other people feel that music has and continues to slide down a hill of doom?

Not really; because I've heard some of the UTTER CRAP that was "popular" back THEN.*
Remember, only the "good" stuff is remembered.
Look up "Disco Duck" some time. It was a No. 1 hit in 1976.
There have always been young musicians; Laurie London had a No. 1 hit in 1958 at the age of "14."
There have ALWAYS been shallow songs. Tell me, how much "depth" is there in Sugar, Sugar? Most popular song of 1969, by the Archies?
Look up Fabian some time; huge teen sensation of the late 1950s. According to HIM, he was "only" signed by the record company because "he was handsome." According to HIM, he "couldn't carry a tune in a bucket," and the record company "electronically altered" his voice to sound passable.
A no-talent pretty boy dominating the charts simply because teen girls thought he was cute? SOUND FAMILIAR?
I know that somebody is going to try to prove me wrong by mentioning a truly great song. There is a 90% chance that song DIDN'T CHART, and therefore it is NOT fair to compare it to today's music. There really is some great music out there today, but just like the truly great music of "back then," it rarely makes the Top 40.
Edit: LOL at thinking music didn't "used to" be filled with dirtyness. In 1951, the Dominos released a song entitled, "Sixty Minute Man." The song is pretty blatently about sex, basically bragging that he's a man who can "please" his woman for an hour. I've heard it, and it really doesn't strike me as anything special, "musically."
It was a No. 1 R&B hit for "fourteen weeks," largely because it was dirty. Music has always been filthy; they were just a tad more subtle about it.
You know the Beatles had a song called, "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" right? "Why don't we do it in the road? No one will be watching us; why don't we do it in the road?"
I have "dozens," perhaps "hundreds" of songs from the last 15 years in my iTunes, and I really can't think of any that are about sex, "hoes," money or "bitches."
Oh, wait! I know a song about bitches! "*****," by the Rolling Stones, 1971!
And one about money! "Money (That's What I Want)" by Barrett Strong and covered by the Beatles. [Honestly, "Money (That's What I Want)" REALLY sounds like the kind of title these songs you're all complaining about would have.]
Source(s): *I actually like most of it; it's just that I can tell the difference between music that's "actually good," and "bad" music that's fun to listen to. A Day in the Life- Actually good. Papparazzi (Lady Gaga)- Bad, but sure is fun to listen to. Of course, there's stuff that's just BAD. - :)Lv 68 years ago
Nah. There is good and bad stuff in every time period. People just tend to emphasise the really good stuff from the past. There's lots of nice music out these days, and not all of it is actually that shallow. And even if it was, I think that's ok, because when everything is super-deep it just gets boring and there's nothing wrong with music that's just there for you to have fun and not to contemplate your existence. Also everyone's taste is different. :)
People who are complaining that today's music is filled with dirty messages...there are *plenty* of songs from the 60's and 70's containing "dirty messages". And there's lots of songs with crappy and disgusting lyrics from back then *cough* Led Zeppelin's 'Sick Again'.

I'm the 90's, music greatly improved from the music put out beforehand. Since the 2000's, music has been greatly ruined for the most part. You have to really look to find a sing worth hearing.

In an era of limitless choice you get what you look for. If you're waiting for good music to be hand delivered by the golden hands of Nike and McDonalds you're going to get music that reflects those values.

You are a special snowflake, congrats
To answer your question, I as well listen to older music, but that doesnt mean I have a right to judge and call todays music crappy, if you dont like, then dont listen to it. Simple as that

Not really. You just choose to indulge yourself in the crap you hear on the radio and make a generalization that ALL modern music is digital b/s.

It's been tarnished and filled with symbols and underlying dirty messages! Now 60s, 70s,80s,90s music are well worth listening too!

Not really, there are tons of great songs still, but nothing popular is any good.
