Swimming flip turns!!!! Help?

When I try to turn I start off by jumping forward a little; but even before I jump forward I don't feel my feet are planted firmly on the bottom of the pool even at the shallowest end so I can't really jump properly. When I try to tuck my chin in, I don't think I tuck it in enough!! When I try to flip over I try to tuck my knees which I bend and pull together toward my upper chest but they get loose as I turn. i have no idea what to do with my arms so I don't really do anything with them. My "turn" ends up with my back on the surface of the water with partially tucked in knees and a little tilt of my head toward the bottom of the pool (and a whole lot of water in my nose when I get my friends to flip me over). HELP!!! I have no idea of to let my body go "down" so I can flip!!! I'm just going forward instead of down and over!!!

First of all, your feet should never touch the bottom of the pool so I don't know what you are trying to accomplish there as you do not "jump" through a turn. As you approach the wall, you need to pull down with your last stroke to help your head and shoulders to start to rotate down. At the same time, you need to tuck your chin down into your chest. This will lower your head, and along with the pull down stroke push your upper body down in the water and start the flip. Then you simply do a dolphin kick with your legs, then complete the flip by tucking your knees to your chest. You should actually flip on an angle, and not straight over. so that when after your flip and your feet find the wall you should be sideways in the water. As you push off the wall, you roll back on your front, dolphin kick to the surface, then continue your stroke.

Hi! I had the same problems when i first learned to do a flip turn. I learned to flip straight over. Anyway, when i first tried it, i went sideways and instead of flipping over, i just 'twirled' around. I know it might be scary at first because i would always get scared of going upside-down. The first thing when you initiate a flip, is to take a big enough breath, then when you flip, tuck your chin in, and look at your knees. REMEMBER to blow bubbles through your nose, so you don't get water up your nose!

So, as you approach the wall, tuck your chin in, keep your arms above your head ready for streamline, and kick off.

here's a video that might help as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryN-4R1E8d8

    hope this helps!!

When you reach the wall, a stroke away, take a deep breath, dolphin kick, summer salt, roll your arms like a windmill, then push off. If you have trouble with water up your nose, plug with one hand.

Every swimming movement starts with your head. It leads the way.

If you want to flip - your head needs to be below the level of your butt. If your butt is above the head, you will be able to 'dive' into the flip turn.

use your arms to push your head lower than your bum.

Try to flip off the diving board. The extra jump of the board will give you time to initiate a full flip in the air.
