What does this boy feel about me?

So I was wondering what this may mean:

In 9th grade, the guy was in one period of class and I was in a different period of class. After school, as students everyone who took the class had to volunteer. So this guy and I periodically were working together after school and we both talked to each other and he was pretty nice. In 10th grade, none of us had classes together so we didn't really talk much or see each other much. Now I am in 11th grade and we are in a class together. The guy once in a while looks at me. I try not to look but he just looks my way and sort of smiles. I do notice he sees me because when I do look up he sees me and turns towards the teacher acting like nothing happens. When I talked to him in class on the first day of school (before any of this happened), he was pretty nice to me and was really excited sounding. So do you think he may like me because to be honest I just want to be friends and that's it.
