Why doesn't Link talk in any of The Legend of Zelda games?

I don't mean voice over I mean even when it's text he still doesn't talk yet everyone seems to know what he thinking.

In the past it was probably just easier to make it so he didn't talk. And in a way it made the character more likeable. If you didn't know exactly what he was saying you could imagine Link to be the way you wanted him to. After all these years and Link being known as an essentially mute protagonist it would ruffle a lot of feathers if they made him have real dialog now.

Although he does talk in the CD-i games made by Philips and it turns out that in hindsight it wasn't such a great idea...

He does do a little bit of talking in what I think is Majoras Mask, but can't quite remember, I think it's a short sentence of two to choose from, but you don't hear anything.
