The glass core of an optical fiber has an index of refraction 1.66. The index of refraction of the cladding is 1.46. What is the maximum angle a light ray can make with the wall of the core if it is to remain inside the fiber?

In other words we need to find the critical angle of the fiber/cladding pair. This will be given by

    sin^-1(1.46/1.66) = 61.6 degrees.

But that's the angle with respect to the normal. To get the angle with respect to the wall, we need to subtract this from 90 degrees to get 28.4 degrees.
