Why is >Grease< The Word?

Just why would the maker of this Musical take one fact that MEN used Grease in their Hair in the 50's and decide to Title their MOVIE after a Hair ACCESSORY?

Why IS GREASE THE WORD?

Google song meanings for Grease and your get NOTHING!!!

One strange idea I've had is that sexual repression in the 50's started a trend where the "social lubricant" for sexual release was as close at hand as a subtle hand brushed through the hair...

Michael Jackson's " Beat it" seems to be a similar affectation on this same theme...

sex and violence go hand and hand

check out some of the lyrics:

I solve my problems and I see the light

We got a lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right

There ain't no danger we can go to far

We start believing now that we can be what we are

Grease is the word

They think our love is just a growing pain

Why don't they understand, It's just a crying shame

Their lips are lying only real is real

We stop the fight right now, we got to be what feel

Grease is the word

It's got groove it's got meaning

Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion

Grease is the way we are feeling

We take the pressure and we throw away

Conventionality belongs to yesterday

There is a chance that we can make it so far

We start believing now but we can be who we are

Grease is the word

It's got groove it's got meaning

Grease is the time, is the place is the motion

Grease is the way we are feeling

This is the life of illusion

Wrapped up in trouble, laced with confusion

What are we doing here?

We take the pressure and we throw away

Conventionality belongs to yesterday

There is a chance that we can make it so far

We start believing now that we can be who we are

Grease is the word

It's got groove it's got meaning

Grease is the time, is the place is the motion

Grease is the way we are feeling

The movie focuses mainly on two groups - the greasers and the pink ladies. The greasers were known for their style and bad boy attitude, which included slicking their hair back. I think you might be overthinking it, but given the content of the movie I'm not entirely sure. I think the song is just about the problems the teens deal with and how they're struggling to balance between what the adults in their lives want them to be and what society tells them to be, which hasn't exactly gone away even now.

Having said that, it's not the only movie/musical/play named after a hairproduct. There's also Hairspray.

You're letting your own sexual repression speak - not really serious. In the 50's there was the major part of society, which was pretty much Disneyland. Crew cuts, no kissing on the first date, largely no sex before marriage, largely little or no drinking as teens, and certainly no drugs. Doris Day, John Wayne, Ronald Reagan. On the other side of society, in a small minority, was counterculture. Some but not all of them used grease in their relatively long hair (men, that is). Where I came from they were largely Hispanic, too. Long story short, they were often referred to as "greasers" or "greaseballs". It's a song about the counterculture and it's also just a show tune. It's catchy.
