Name a few sequels that out grossed their predecessors at the box office?
I think people's mindset when it comes to watching a sequel is what makes them bomb. They go in with expectations that are sky high esp if the first one was a blockbuster and end up being disappointed. Home alone 1 & 2 were good but when the producers kept goin it was just cr@ppy. The same goes for batman, the last installment was like a big P0$

The Dark Knight outgrossed Batman Begins (though I think Batman Begins is better but...)
Don 2 (India) outgrossed Don (actually it more than doubled the grosses)
Asterix et Obelix: Mission Cleopatre (France) outgrossed Asterix et Obelix contre Cesar ("Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar"). Actually the sequel became one of the most popular films in France (4th most seen movies of all time in French theaters). It also received good reviews, contrary to the 1st installment.
Matrix Reloaded outgrossed Matrix.
Funny thing: Wrath of the Titans outgrossed Clash of the Titans outside the US (by more than 100 million dollars) but its domestic grosses (in the US) lost around 50%...
I agree with you that often people have too high expectations and can't enjoy normally a sequel. Of course, some sequel are also not very good ^^
