Mane is slowly disappearing?!!!?

My QH had a hogged mane when I brought him almost about 18 months ago, it has taken me ages to get it to a nice length. It's thick and looking good. Although he's always had a little bit missing in the middle, now that little bit is getting bigger and bigger. He has no neck rug on so nothing is rubbing it. It's not flakey or sore and I've washed it a couple of times in the last few weeks to make sure it's not sore. I was thinking of using some "stop itch" on it and washing it everyday for a week and see if that makes a difference. Can anyone help please? Anyone know any good remedies?

Update:

He probably is rubbing it out but I'd like to know why.

He's out with 4 other horses, 3 he has lived with for a long time and never had this issue and the other one a little 3 year old Arab whom is very playful, however not dominant. My horse is very dominant and can get quite aggressive. Lets just say he doesn't let other horses near him very often.

You may need to rub in an oil type product made for horses. We are using MDG for thinning tails and also for thin manes. I am not really sure if it is the massaging that is making everything grow better or the product, but it is working.

He may be either itchy or hungry. Or another horse could be chewing on him. I bet that it's the young one!

If it's an itching problem, try hydrocortisone and MTG. If he's hungry and reaching through the fence, try putting him in a paddock without grass on the other side or giving an extra feeding of hay. If another horse is chewing on him (even dominant horses let others groom and play with them sometimes) you might very carefully try Raplast in very small amounts on part of his mane. It is super hot though so be very careful not to get it on skin. Bitter apple or cribhalt on his mane might work too. The young horses love to chew on tails too especially as their teeth are coming in! A three year old is getting new molars.

Are you sure shes not rubbing it on a tree or the fence? And is she out with any other horses, some horses will actually chew the mane or tail on other horses just like goats do to horses sometimes..

when i came back from Arizonian back to my home state i put my horse back in his pasture and after taking him out again for some shows when he came back the horses all neighed and loved to see him back form the show season and now i went out to see him and his forelock is a tuff cause some one bit it or was playing with it and he is a very playful and dominate horse so sometimes i guess this just happens but i use mane tail and groom (tmg) its the best stuff ever and works great just put some on the roots at NIGHT(because it can be come irritating if the sun shines on it all day) good luck i am just going to let my horses grow back over winter if who ever stops chewing on it.

The other answers have pretty much covered it but to add if you have a hay feeder in the field it could also be causing it. I've seen a number of horses with the same rub marks from a feeder as well.
