Can you somehow get a red-light ticket for going through a yellow light?
I was about 50 feet away from the photo-enforced intersection when the green light suddenly turned yellow. I decided to gun the engine to about 5 miles over the speed limit and made it through without seeing the red light. However, after about 50 feet I saw a bright flash behind me. Was I caught, or did some other car get lit up?
This happened around midnight.

whatever it was, it is not illegal to enter or be in an intersection when the light is yellow.
a red light means you cannot ENTER the intersection.
a yellow light neither requires nor prohibits anything. It's just a warning that the light is about to turn red.
that being said, red light cameras make lots and lots of mistakes.

Where I live we do not have cameras at stop lights, yet. One time I had a green that went yellow when I was about 50-100 feet from intersection waiting for a car to move in front of me. By the time the car moved the light went yellow and I went into the intersection. By this time the light went red I guess and a police car pulled me over. My guess is the camera is set to see the point you should be stopping from when the light turns yellow. Which is calculated by what the speed limit is. So if you do not have time to stop safely when doing the speed limit you do not stop. It can be a real fine line between the 2 things and I have rarely seen you are in the right when the light turns yellow.

If you've ever driven a car in a place that has installed red-light camera technology for traffic enforcement, you've probably noticed that the yellow lights at the intersections with those cameras are a lot shorter in duration than they are at non-monitored intersections.
The reason why is pretty straightforward. The state and local governments that generate revenue from issuing traffic tickets for people who violate red lights benefit if they can trap more drivers into entering an intersection after the traffic signal changes from yellow to red. And a very easy way to do that is to set the duration of the yellow caution signal at red-light camera intersections to be shorter than at other intersections, which makes it more difficult for drivers to anticipate how long they will have before the light may turn red

In my locale, there are speed-on-green and red light cameras at high traffic locations. If the light changes from green to amber, the cameras are activated to catch speeders hoping to "beat the clock" and not collide with oncoming vehicles. A bright flash from these cameras means someone's getting a mailed ticket ( I've had those).

The sensors may be in place for speeding. If that was a speed sensor light, then it may have taken a picture for the speed. It's common for people to get speeding and a red light from cameras.
