1999 Subaru legacy outback automatic transmission?
will a 1999 Subaru legacy outback automatic transmission fit in a 1997 Subaru legacy outback with a auto transmission

Will it fit? Even though the '97 is a four-bolt bell housing and the '99 is an eight bolt, it will "fit".
The real question is: are the electronic controls and plug-ins the same?
Examine carefully the number and location of the pins and the shape and size of the connectors, as it won't work properly if the electronically controlled transmission does not match up exactly.
The overall ratio, 441:1, is the same in '97 and '99, so there would be no need to change the rear differential.
