You can consider CaCl2 to be soluble in water. It therefore produces 3 ions in the equation below (n=3)
alpha is just how soluble in water. We will say it is very soluble
The van t'Hoff factor is i = 1 + (n-1)*alpha
i = 1 + (3 - 1)
i = 3
The osmotic pressure formula is
P = i * M * R * T
P = ???
i = 3 from above
M = 0.2 mol
R = 0.08206 L atm/oK
we need a temperature to do this. We'll suppose it is a standard temperature of 273 oK in 1 liter
P = 3 * 0.2mol * 0.08206 * 273
P = 13 which seems awfully high.but that's what it comes to.
