The 7D is rather heavy.
The 70D has a newer sensor.
The 7D does seem to be durable

As long as you're happy with it that's all that matters. They've dropped in price to under $1000US over my way which may or may not mean the ''2'' could arrive before Xmas, however that doesn't mean the ''1'' is going to stop working all of a sudden. It has that many features, by the time you master them all the ''6'' will be on the shelves.

way late to ask this question.
The 7D is like a high end Lexus with motor from a lawn mower.
The body is high end, mag alloy, weather sealing, and high end auto focus and feature set, well for the time anyway (2009).
But Canon being greedy, stuffed it with the same image sensor as a cheap Canon Rebel. So if you are moving up from the Rebel, image quality is no better. Either way you got ripped off where the image sensor is concerned.
For similar money, the Nikon D7000 or Pentax K5 II have superior image sensors, or any new Sony Alpha or Pentax, any Sony NEX, and my Fuji X100. The list goes on, but I'll stop there.
