People talking over me even tho I'm quiet.?
Hi, I'm starting my new job soon, caring for the elderly and I'm a bit nervous but excited. I'm a very quiet person tho and just a bit nervous about how I'm going to get on with other care workers and clients. Every time and try and talk in the group when doing the training no one here's me cuz everyone jus talking.
Any tips on how to jus be yourself and not be to quiet.
Thanks

Hi Amy, I am the sole caretaker of my 90 year old mom. I understand being quiet, I am quite the introvert myself, so I tend to blend into the background. The only problem I foresee is caring for the elderly you may have to speak REALLY LOUD. It is important that the clients understand what you are saying, it is a huge responsibility, and you almost have to assume that they can't hear (especially if they show signs of hearing loss to begin with).
My mom feels hearing loss is a sign of weakness, and when she fell and shattered her shoulder, the doctor came in and said they thought she may have brain damage because of the answers of the questions they were asking her. I told them that she didn't have brain damage, she just couldn't hear and was guessing at what they were saying, and was answering accordingly.
When you give instructions to them, make sure they repeat it back, and you will know they understand. As far as the group goes, try to speak up, you will need the practice.
Good luck to you, we need more caring people like you.
