It is called Kobe Beef. A good butcher would have it.

Unless you are in a big city chances are you will not be able to find real kobe beef. 99% of the restaurants and butchers that have kobe meet only have American and Australian kobe. Although the American Kobe is relatively cheap, $30-$50 a lb, I personally found it to be no better than USDA prime. . If you cannot get Japanese Kobe, you next best thing is Au kobe. I can normally get 7/8 grade from my butcher for between $50 and $120 a pound depending on the cut. Unless they already have it in stock, you may be required to get at least 4-6lbs depending on the butcher because they will most likely have to special order it. To me this is a good cheap alternative.

If you are set on only getting Japanese kobe, my recommendation is to go to japan because you will most likely waste your money here in the US and here is why

    1. Many places who claim to have Japanese kobe are lying so you maybe spending a lot of money on a false experience

    2. Almost all of the real kobe I have seen in the US, were low quality cuts (ie sirloin) so they can sell it cheap (ie $300 for a 5 oz cut).

    3. The only places I have had it prepared correctly (ie in a way that it enhances the flavor) were in Japan.

With that said if you want to try and make real yourself, you can see if your butcher can order it but do not be shocked if they cant. It however looks like you can though order it from

Source(s): I have never ordered though from them so I cannot vouch for it. The prices however have seemed to have significantly dropped after the nuclear meltdown which makes me wonder if thier is a safty concern lowering the demand
