Is there a way to make google maps show all businesses around me?
I want to know if it's possible to make maps put the red pegs on every business around me like on: McDonalds, Walmart, Family Video etc.

Here is what you can do!
You can choose to look at different types of buildings on Google Maps.
1) Go to http://maps.google.com/
2) Enter the address or an address close to the place you are looking for.
3) On the right hand side you should see the following:
Get Directions |MAPS
https://maps.google.com/?mid=1217745317Hit "My Maps"
https://maps.google.com/?mid=1217745317
4) Select "Places of Interest" under "Featured content". If it is not there hit "Browse the Directory" and from there add "Places of Interest".
5) After selecting "Places of Interest"

the asterisk didnt work for me, but typing in the word "businesses" once you are zoomed into your area in the search box did
