Why did they have to close an open air memorial?
It takes more money to close an open air memorial than to leave it open. So why barricade them unless it is a political ploy by our president to make the government shutdown look worse than it is. The video of the WWII veterans being blocked from going to the WWII Memorial showed more park rangers in it than I saw the whole time I visited the whole plaza. Does not look like a shutdown to me.

Maintenance personnel have been furloughed. That includes cleaning the areas surrounding the memorial grounds. It's a consequence of politics (democrats and republicans), not a ploy from the president.
