Eucalyptus trees have been planted in Ireland over the last 100 years. Most varieties are hardy down to -16C and lower. They are being grown commercially in places for biomass as a fast growing alternative fuel and crop.
To grow from seeds they need to be kept in the fridge for a couple of months unless they have already been stratified by the seed company - it will say on the packet. They need a deep seed tray as they don't like root disturbance. Use good general purpose compost and warm it up first in a propagator if possible. If not germination may take a little longer. Sprinkle the seeds on top and moisten. Place in the propagator or make a mini greenhouse with a plastic bag. Don't let the soil surface dry out. Mist the surface if necessary. Germination usually takes 1-2 weeks. When the seedlings have their first set of true leaves carefully transfer them into their own individual 2-3" pots. Eater and place in bright shade. They should be planted out in their permanent position within 12-15 months by which time they should be at least 1ft high. They are prone to windsock so shouldn't be planted taller than 3ft. Do not stake as their roots will be stronger if left to develop unaided. Don't add manure to the soil when planting out but make sure they have good drainage and keep well watered for first couple of years - shouldn't be a problem!
Eucalyptus will grow very tall very quickly and should not be planted too close to buildings. They are, however, very suitable for coppicing to keep them to shrub size. I cut mine down to 8" every spring and they soon put back on 5-6ft. The foliage, apart from having a lovely fragrance is highly prized from florists. I cut mine just before Easter to decorate the church.
Suitable Eucalyptus in Ireland are nitens, globules, delagatensis, muelleri, urnigera and gunnii azure. You can buy ready grown trees, of course, but they are more costly. Take a look at www.johnstowngardencentre.ie/eucalyptus. They ship within Ireland and the UK.

They grow just fine in the UK, so should grow just as well in Ireland (which is warmer).
They are better suited to loose, free-draining soils, but as long as it's not water-logged they are not overly fussy. The only potential problem is that in these sorts of climates they can be prone to falling down in strong winds (in the natural habitat they grow deep tap roots to search for water, and this anchors them. But in Northern European climates they get plenty of water at the surface, so don't grow the tap root, and so can be more prone to falling over).

I live in North Dakota, USA. This state is a zone 3 state as far as trees go. Many types of trees will not survive the cold winter temperatures here as well as the long winter, and the length of cold temperatures. You need to determine what zone you live in and what the tree species you are looking for is rated at.
