    Call the number 'x', then work it out:

    1) x/6

    2) 2*(x/6)

    3) 2*(x/6) + 8

    4) 2*(x/6) + 8 = 24

    Now, solve for x.

    a) 2*(x/6) + 8 = 24

    b) x/3 + 8 = 24

    c) x/3 = 16

    d) x = 48

    24 - 8 = 16 then 16/2 = 8 then 8 x 6 = 48 (the answer).
