Exactly what is a "Map Sensor"?

I installing an aftermarket EFI on my 1932 Chevy Hotrod. One of the components is a Map Sensor.

What I want to know is what does it do?

MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. It compares the outside pressure with the pressure inside the Intake Manifold and tells the computer it either needs more air or less air depending on the outside pressure. This is important if you live by the beach and decide to go to Pike's Peak in Colorado. It literally makes sure you have just enough pressure in the intake for the engine to perform efficiently.
