    1) start with

    y = 2x - 4

    2) It specifically says that y equals x - 1

    So sub in x - 1 in the place of y

    After you replace y with its perfect equal x - 1, you get:

    x - 1 = 2x - 4

    3) Subtract x from both sides to get all the x terms on the same side together

    Once you subtract, you will get this:

    - 1 = x - 4

    4) Add 4 to both sides to isolate x

    After you add, you end up with this:

    3 = x <-- answer

    y=x-1

    y=2x-4

    since y = y then

    y=x-1=2x-4, so

    x-1=2x-4

    subtract x from both sides to get x's on one side

    x-x-1 = 2x-x-4

    -1 = x - 4

    now add 4 to both sides to get rid of the 4

    4-1 = x-4+4

    3 = x

    if x is 3 then y = 2 if you plug into any of the given equations

    x - 1 = 2x - 4

    x = 3, y = 2
