You don't need to use so many cleaners, etc. Just rely on a few that work well (my recommendations are below). Here's what I would do: 0. Ensure the Hard Disc Drive is not damaged or faulty. Solution - Run CheckDisk: a. Start> Computer >select C Drive>Right Click C Drive>select "Properties">"Tools" > click "Check Now"> Select both boxes and click "Start". b. This can take a long time, so let it complete (may take all night or longer. Be patient.) 1. Do a System Restore to a point before this was a problem: a. Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore (click to open); b. Select a restore point well before you started having these problems; c. Start the restore process and let it complete (Name the restore operation something descriptive like "Browsing Repair"). Note: you will need to re-install any programs and maybe the updates that were installed after that restore point -- one of which may be the cause of this. Re-Install one at a time so you can see if any one of them causes the problem). 2. Get good Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs (AVG is good for Anti Virus; Ad Aware and MalWare Bytes are good, free anti malware programs -- see links below. Get the AV if you don't have one and either AdAware or Malware Bytes). a. Download your choice of anti malware and install it b. Run a complete (full) SpyWare scan and handle whatever it finds. c. Run a complete Virus Scan and handle whatever it finds (if you are going to change AV programs, remove the old one first before installing AVG). 3. Next, ensure the Registry is clean and the disk's clutter is also cleaned out. Solution: Get and run a good registry cleaner. a. Check to see if there is a registry cleaner already on the system; b. if none, get CCleaner at the site below c. Run the Registry cleaner till it finds and corrects all errors d. Run the "Cleaner" to analyze the disk and see what it finds to delete and then delete the files that are not needed (most of the files it finds are unneeded, but look through the categories to be safe). 4. Run a good disk defrag. If you use the computer more than occasionally, the built-in may not cut it. Consider downloading a free trial of a third party commercial defrag tool. Third party programs are more robust and many work in the background so you can use your PC while defragging. Defraggler is better than the windows defragmenter for sure. I stopped using it on a windows 7 machine and switched to Auslogics Free Defrag and found that to be better.

Currently I use Ultra Defrag but there's not much benefit unless you're an advanced user who can customize the boot time script to suit your own machine. On my machine a full defrag of three partitions typically takes less than a minute. Some data files are excluded from the defrag process. The page file is swapped to a non-windows partition. A RAMdisk is excluded.

As for windows disk cleanup - it's possible to run cleanmgr.exe and ser sagerun options for a more advanced clean.

As for wiping free space and MFT - I use Sysinternals Sdelete from the command line to do that.

Like you say - Ccleaner does miss a lot if stuff and it's great for a quick basic clean but really ought to be used alongside other more advanced cleaners. The ones I use most are:

PrivaZer, Blank & Secure, System Ninja, Bleachbit and SlimCleaner.

For a quick daily clean I stick with Ccleaner.

CCleaner is great. Windows built in doesn't touch all temporary files especially system and application caches. Why? Because they'll get sued if it breaks something.

So yes CCleaner is good.

The defraggler is also very good, I'd personally use it over the Windows built in.

However that said it isn't THAT much better. A defragger just consolidates similar files next to each other on the disk sector.

Defraggler will also defrag large files, Windows does not.

Putting extra stuff on your laptop/PC is never advisable. Try using built-in "Disk Cleanup & defragmentation utility" regularly; I would recommend on weekly basis to keep your system in best condition. Select to cleanup old system restore data to get some extra space if needed.
