Back in the day, was it ok for a mason in the KKK to lynch a black Mason?
I'm just curious how secret clubs work. I know it was ok for a white southern baptist in the KKK to lynch a black southern baptist but did this courtesy extend to masons? Was there black masons years ago when lynchings were common?

Masons aren't affiliated with the KKK, in fact in many areas they directly opposed one another. Lynchings actually weren't that common, there were about 5,000 from 1880 until 1970 in the entire country, definitely not something unheard of, but it's not like they were happening on every streetcorner. For some perspective more people died every year from Diarrhea back in those days. As for whether black masons would be protected, I'm not a mason so I'm not sure... but Lynchings were usually targeted affairs so if a Mason organized one it seems a little odd they would target one of their own order.

Loaded question for sure. Much like asking a man..So when did you stop beating your wife?
The fact is lynching is illegal and always has been and not common, thank God. Freemason are obligated to obey the local laws in the place where thy live so this would be diametrically opposed to what Freemasonry stands for. The actions of the KKK would and should be abhorrent to any Freemason.
Even if the member you ask about was a Freemason, which in the south did happen if the KKK member didn't reveal his association with the KKK to the Masons.
However this is not the norm and if a member (black or white) identified himself as a Freemason, yes the other (black or white), would be obligated to help him if his life was in danger.

It was never OK for anyone to lynch anyone.
The entire attitude and beliefs of the KKK are incompatible with Freemasonry,
But if a Freemason had decided to join the KKK and get involved in a lynching, then i doubt if the fact that his victim was another Freemason, would have made him question his actions,he had already forgotten the basics of Freemasonry.
Part of what we Freemasons believe,is that we should uphold the laws of the land and not get involved in criminal actions,we must also have moral beliefs.
Lynching is wrong,it is murder, which has always been illegal.
I am a Freemason.
