What kind of stuff do they what to know,?

Applying for a job, and I don't know what they are asking for when asked what the background of your past job experience means? Question was, What is your background in retail? I have already answered what my past duties and responsibilities were, I really don't understand this simple sounding question. It has been a very long time since I have had to apply for work.

"Background" can also mean what you were selling, and your specialist knowledge of the items themselves or essential information for customers. If you were selling leather items, for example, did you give advice on cleaning and care? Or did you sell cars, or electrical items, and explain how to use them, and about guarantees and after-sales service? That kind of thing. Useful experience.

IF you have background in retail, what, exactly, did you do? I stocked shelves, arranged displays, changed prices on displays, did inventory - I'm assuming that this is a retail job you applied for, they want to know, other than a listing of where and when you worked, how you can apply skills or knowledge in retail to their store.

The word retail involves many different interpretations. The employer just wants to see if you have the abilities they are looking for in an employee. Good luck getting the job.

If you have worked in retail like at Macy's or something like that then put down those places and the jobs you did there etc. if you haven't worked in retail just say no experience.
