WHAT WOULD A 2 1/2 INCH CYLINDRICAL METAL 15 SECOND TIMER BE USED FOR?

It's as big around as a fat pencil with windows on each side so you can see the hour glass shaped part holding the sand. It says on the side 1/4 min. Could this be medical in nature...any ideas?

    This is posted in CHEMISTRY but it is unlikely to have any chemical use. You idea of medical seems reasonable, so try posting in that section. Pity you didn't use the 'add media ' facility to post a picture.
