Please help :( distressed bird owner here!?
Ok so for those of you who don't know, there's over 90 bush fires burning in nsw at the moment, hundreds of houses have been lost , people have been evacuated etc.
My house which usually doesn't need to have any lights on during the day because of sky lights and huge windows , was pitch black at 2pm, and outside the atmosphere was a red tinge
I have an aviary full of finches ,who are very flighty and delicate , yesterday due to all the smoke ( we had a huge fire about a kilometre away) when my finches tried to fly yesterday all they could do was flutter to the ground , my poor babies were choking on the smoke and ash , some were able to fly up onto a perch and others not
Catching and moving them into another cage is completely out of the question because their cardio vascular system was already under a heap of stress and panicking like that would only cause them to drop dead
Please guys if you have any suggestions it would be great , I can't put a cover over the aviary because its about 35 degrees , they'll cook
It was so heart breaking to see them panic and struggle :(

I would cover them with a comforter or something thick, heavy and wet; and throw in a air purifier OR a cool mist humidifier. The dark, thick, wet cover will keep the light and surrounding smoke out and help to regulate the temp. the humidify will weight down the smoke debris in the air of the aviary to the ground and help to cool off the air and the purifier will clean the air but please don't use both machines. That would be my line of acton.
Then if you can when they calm down a bit, place animal carriers in the aviary and when they go in, just close the door and move them indoors with the carriers covered in wet towels.
Good luck, my prayers are with you
