Did John Winchester sacrifice himself for Dean on Supenatual S2E1?
The demon asked for something else much more than the gun for Dean to come back to life and when Dean did, John died. So like what happened? Did John have to give up the gun AND die for Dean to live? o.o (Im a newbie to the show. Don't kill me /.\)

I thought the other answers were going to contain spoilers...kudos guys!
But yes, John's plan was originally to give up the Colt for Dean's life. But Azazel, seeing an opportunity, demanded his soul as well. Usually someone gets 10 years of life after making a deal with a demon but this was a special case, so John only got enough time to see that Dean was up-and-about again (meaning Azazel had kept his end of the deal) before being taken to Hell.

Yeah, he did sacrifice himself! He gave up the gun and his soul to Azazel(yellow eyed demon) in exchange for Dean to be restored to full life. His soul was collected shortly after the deal, that's why he died right there in the hospital.
