Sociological imagination is the belief that society itself rather than things in society can influence people. One example is Emile Durkeim's study of suicide statistics. Durkeim found several unsurprising things: Protestants tend to have higher suicide rates than Catholics because Catholics have a tighter bond to their religious beliefs, for example. And he looked at suicide and economic statistics. In times of depression suicide rates increase which is not surprising. As a control he looked at suicide rates in times of economic boom. He found that in boom times suicide rates also increase. And he learned that what people need for low suicide rates is stability. Both depression and boom are changes and cause increasing suicide rates. The inability to cope with change he called anomie. He also gave us the 5 aspects of alienation: Helplessness, hopelessness, meaninglessness, normlessness and anomie.
