When you say "lord/soldier" it cames to my mind that, the painting you are looking for, depicts someone dressed as a "respected" man and a soldier at the same time. Talking about wars (the question come from the US, so probably you read some American/English War History book), there is a famous painting that shows General James Wolfe, dying in the battle ground in the arms of his men, by Benjamin West painted in 1770, The General died during the 7 years war between England and France (Battle of Quebec). He died some hours later, not in the battle ground). So, maybe, just maybe your "lord" is English and not French (Canadian).

Perhaps the confusion comes from the soldier, on the left of General Wolfe, carrying a captured French flag (Fleur-de-lis, a symbol of France)

Just a wild guess, anyway.
