Depends how far 'up north' you are going. I was born & lived in a cold, miserable climate - but left and never went back. That was more than 20 years ago. But I still remember: Snow shovels, hooded parka coats, rock salt in bags, windshield ice-scrapers that you stash either under the seat or in one of the compartments in the door/dash. You might need gloves and a remote engine starter and a snow blower and winter tires - more or less, as I said - depending on how far north you're heading - and you will find all this stuff on sales & displayed at the appropriate time of year.
Good luck.. and.. condolences. 'Winter' here means sunny - blue sky days & 67 degrees. Until late January. Then it slowly begins adding a degree here & there. By late February it averages 73 degrees.
