Vegetarians in south-India make ' Vadas' and offer it to Goddes Durga as a sacrifice. For making Vadas either only 'Udad dal or along with it moong, and tuvar dal are soaked in water till they become soft and dough is made out of it adding salt & pepper and fried as balls in oil, are offered to the 'mother' as prasad along with normal curry,dal, rice and curd plus whatever dishes are cooked as 'nyvedyam' and taken as 'prasad'. This recipe is called "maasha apoopam".

This is practiced by people from West Bengal, as far as I know. People in North, West and South India do not follow this custom.
