For your needs a chromebook sould be perfect unless you want to splurge on a macbook air, but I think that would be overkill. Keep in mind, Chrome OS will only allow you to run web apps, some of which work without an internet connection. Think Google Docs, Gmail, Angry birds, Pixlr photo editor etc... Annoyingly you cannot install google earth or skype, you will need to use google hangouts instead. If long battery life is important then the acer C720 is probably the best choice at the moment, it is also the cheapest. The most stylish and portable with the best screen is the HP11, and the Samsung series 3 has a 3G version, so you don't even have to buy a dongle, you can just pop in a sim card. 3g dongles will work with all models. However, if you are going to use this in india, I do wonder about the reliability of internet coverage, I think it will be spotty at best. Thankfully you can still get some work done while offline and you can save videos and music to an SD card or USB dongle. The chromebooks themselves have very little storage, 16 gb only. BTW, the acer is also available to buy in India now for rs 23000 I think, if you are staying there long term you should probably buy it locally to avoid any issues with warranty, etc...

If you're only going to browse the web, why do you need a fast processor? Anyway, chromebooks are designed for internet use, and other google applications. The battery life depends on the user. I believe that the battery life will drain faster on a laptop, well simply because it is build to be more advanced.

BE WARNED, CHROMEBOOKS ARE ONLY FOR INTERNET USE. Laptops are build for more professional and/or everyday use. I suggest that you should buy a laptop. Why? Because I believe that you will be left out when a friend of yours introduce a software. And aside from being left out, many installers are not built for Chrome OS. And since Windows is open-source (meaning, anybody can make a software even if it is not authorized by Microsoft), you can install softwares directly. On the other hand, Chromebooks are still on their young stages, they have limited apps, and functions. But if you want to support Google, then go for it. BUT I WARN YOU, you may feel OUT OF PLACE, except if you want everyone's attention to focus on something rare, of course, haha...

P.S.: I dont own a Chromebook, I don't plan on owning one. I have a desktop that can give me my everyday needs in the cyber world. Cheers!

Source(s): My friend owns a Chromebook, and he does not use it very much because of the software limitations.

Chromebook is great for some casual users who need a smooth-running machine for surfing the web, responding to email and watching Netflix with high battery life of 5 to 6 hrs. But if you want full flexibility such as windows software or storage but less battery life go for laptop. Currently, only Huawei dongles are supported on the Chromebook. But you can use hotspot built on your smart phone for 3g connectivity or internet. And Welcome to India brother.

The Chromebook is perfect for someone who is doing nothing but Internet. Basically, it is a laptop without a bunch of hard disk space and without Windows. If you don't need to install (Windows) applications, then it is a nearly perfect alternative to laptop.

Chromebooks do everything in the cloud, so you won't be able to run windows software.

I don't know if dongles work but i think they do.
