    Mandarin Chinese (Guānhuà), AKA Northern Chinese (Běifānghuà).

    The current standard language of the PRC is formed from this, based largely on the Beijing dialect: Pǔtōnghuà ("common speech") or Guóyǔ ("national language").

    960 million speakers? Depends where you put the boundaries of the different Chinese languages/dialects, I think.
