"How" is a science question. "Why" is a religion question.

The larger the hydrocarbon molecule, the more energy it takes to overcome the strong intermolecular forces of attraction and break the covalent bonds. Fractional distillation relies on the boiling points of the hydrocarbons, and the larger the hydrocarbon, the higher the temperature needed. The larger molecules are obtained at the bottom of the column and the smaller ones at the top.
