I want to know if my bosses are right?
Basically, I need a bit as a clarification. I work in a pub/restaurant, I'm 20 years old, I'm a girl and I'm like 5"0ft. I don't drive, buses stop running at 11, I can't afford taxis so I rely on my mum to pick me up. She can't pick me up after 11! She works pretty gruelling shifts, she needs her sleep, I don't expect her to cater to my every need. When she can't pick me up, i have to walk. This would be fine if the road I had to walk down to get home wasn't an A-road with no paths and no street lights for about a quarter a mile, it's not safe and I have had people pull over and try get me in their cars in daylight, I don't want to think about what would happen at night! So my bosses and team leaders know all this and yet they continue to put me on shifts called finishes which can (and have) led to me leaving and walking home at 12 at night. I don't feel comfortable doing this and have expressed this however my bosses and team leaders keep pressuring me into these shifts. I have at least three a week. Tonight, I was on a shift, I had done all my jobs, it was just before 11, I asked if I could go and I was denied! My team leader then created jobs for me that I wouldn't usually have to do. I then explained that I had to go because I needed to be picked up by my mum, I was sick of being walked all over. My team leader then said "that's not my problem". I just want yo know where I stand, is there anything I could do? Is it there problem? Or is it mine? If I was abducted or something, it surely would look good on the company.

The only thing you can do is document your reasons why you are reluctant to work these shifts, and hand it to the most senior member of management.
State that you are happy to work until 11 as you can get a lift home but anytime later you are putting your safety at risk being a young woman walking home on your own and its dangerous. Ask if there is anyway the company culd provide a taxi for staff hat work late or arrange lifts.
Failing this say that you will have to decline any shifts that require a late finish.
If your employer doesn't respond or make any changes i'm afraid you need to find another job.

What's in your contract of employment? Did it at all oblige you to stay later at short notice, missing your lift?
Clearly you're quite stressed with the walking at night, as a result of the daytime approaches. Had it not been for those unsolicited approaches, you'd not now be angsting about this situation?
A quarter of a mile on an unlit A-road with no pavement, providing you are wearing a hi-vis jacket or similar, should not present a problem in itself. I strongly believe that, and I feel certain that's how you felt when contemplating accepting the job offer.
You really ought to report those approaches to the police - get at least one crime number.
Also consider speaking with your doctor. The being exposed to the prospect of again being approached could be harming you physically, and clearly might result in you soon giving up your employment. This was forseeable by the aggressors, and is often an aggressor's only intent.
However, might using a bicycle (with lights) , a moped, scooter or small motorbike be an option? Or move closer to the employer?

Though honestly, I don't see why you 'should' go to that trouble and expense.
So, all in all dial 101 and report those approaches to the police NOW. Also have a word with Victim Support
Get well soon :-)

It can work both ways
If your shift ends at 11 then you leave at 11
If your team leader asks why you are leaving when the work aint finished then you can reply that your shift finishes at 11 so thats when you leave.
It aint your problem the work aint finished. just as it aint their problem when you couldnt get home at 12.

The employer is under no obligation to take into account your transport difficulties- just imagine if they had to do this for everyone- there would be chaos.
So you need to find a new job.
And as for being abducted they just wouldn't care- you are unimportant to them!

It is not your companies responsibility to safe guard you. It your responsibilty to get home safely. You should complain higher up about being made to stay over your time. There is no point taking a job where you know you have to walk home in the dark. Businesses are out to make money, not nanny their staff.

Employee transportation to and from work is never the responsibility of the employer. Frankly, employers do not care about your commute; they only care that you arrive on time and ready to work.
I feel for your situation, but your safety when outside of the building you work in is not your employer's concern. They have no responsibility or obligation regarding the safety of your commute. Sounds harsh, I know, but that's simply how it is.
I suggest you look for a new job, perhaps at a company that closes before 11 pm.

Sometimes bosses will make the work environment so awful such as you described, or even cut back hours to only a few a week in an attempt to get the employee to quit. If they fired you they would have to pay toward unemployment, so it is cheaper for them to get you to quit.
Another way to look at it is that you are being tested to see how far they can push you to ascess your skills for advancement.
But no matter what, document everything they do to keep you in this unsafe environment in case something bad does happen to you so you can have retaliation if needed.
Basically it sounds like they are bullies putting you in danger. Personally, I would have to find a new job.

Simply answer, get a job where you do not need to do shifts after 11pm.
It is YOUR problem,

Sadly it's your problem - and your employer sounds ghastly. Hope you find somewhere more considerate than this bunch of idiots.

They could try to be more considerate of you, but legally, sorry, it's your problem.
