What about the Torah?

I understand that a copy of the Torah is a revered object in a Jewish congregation and community. I also know that a Torah must be made according to strict historical and religious principles.

I would like some elaboration about the Torah from Jewish participants in this site.

Not clear what you are asking about.

    Yes -

the Torah is always made by hand by specialy educated and certified professionals -

starting from purpose tanned and cut leather for the "paper",

a hand cut reed or feather for the pen,

and ink that is hand mixed from certain plants according to specific recipe.

The writing is likewise done according to very specific traditions handed down from one generation to the next - and it is a requirement to always copy by hand, from a certified earlier Torah

There is also a purification done before sitting down to write

and many scribes purify before each time they write a reference to God

(at the very least, a special "meditation" is said prior to each time the reference to God is written)

If you have more specific questions -- please ask

    ----

    um...

the whole Torah is read in the synagogue over the course of a year - starting and ending on the holiday "Simhat Torah" (celebration of Torah) - at the end of Sukkot ("feast of booths")

There are three weekday readings - together completing the week's portion

and then a reading of the whole portion on Saturday.

The reader is likewise specialy trained to read the text "just so" -- with specific accents and melodies...

If an error is spotted at any time - either when writing or when reading,

if the error can not be fixed, the scroll is retired from use in the specific manner.

    ==

Most religious Jewish boys, as a "proof of manhood", learn to read the week's section for the Saturday of their Bar Mizvah (entry into adulthood) - and read it at the synagogue service.

The Torah consist of the five books of Moses. The first 5 books of the Jewish bible. Every synagogue has at least one Torah scroll from which we read every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and some holidays.

The Torah scroll is made out of parchment and is hand written by a special scribe. It is checked and rechecked for any mistakes. Each Torah scroll is exactly the same in content all over the world for thousands of years. If you'll see a Torah scroll from Israel, USA, Russia, Yemen, Iran, Venezuela etc... they will all have the same content to the T.

The storyline described in the Torah is the narrative of the Jewish People and the Land of Israel. The unbreakable connection between the People, the Land and God.

In addition to what kaganate says, there are approximately 500 rules on how to write the Torah. Specific words and letters are sometimes written in a special way (larger or smaller), specific passages are written in a particular visual pattern in that part of the Torah, and so on. You can find a bit more at the link below.
