BRACES - Advice for getting them on and rules/tips?
Hi :)
So I'm getting braces put on in a couple days (the day before Halloween - lucky me :/) and I was wondering if anybody could give me advice/info about them in general. I'm very protective of my teeth and I do my best to look after them, so I want to go about wearing braces the right way :P
1. Any advice on what to do before getting them on, when to take pain medication?
2. Pain - how long does it last on average? What is best for it?
3. What are some good things to eat while my mouth is sore?
4. Rules - What are absolute no-no's on what to eat/drink with braces? Are there any other rules I should follow to care for them?
Thank you SO so much if you take the time to answer, I appreciate it greatly!

1. Getting them on should not be painful. If you want to take a small dose of medication an hour before your appointment, that would be fine.
2. Everyone has different experiences with braces and discomfort. Some patients have a day or two of mild discomfort. For others it can last close to a week. Take whatever you would for a headache - Tylenol, Advil, etc.
3. Here are some soft foods to try -->
Oatmeal, pancakes
Eggs (scrambled, fried, poached)
Bananas
Yogurt, pudding, applesauce, jello
Smoothies, milkshakes
Cottage cheese
Soup
Pasta, noodles
Creamy peanut butter on soft bread.
Meat Loaf
Mashed potatoes (add some cheese if you want)
4. The orthodontist or assistant should show you how to brush and floss. They should also tell you about the foods to stay away from. Anything hard, sticky, and chewy can bend the wires and damage your braces.
If they don't review those things with you, be sure to ask them. They are the best ones to give you advice and answer all your questions about braces.
